Currently, the core protocol specification is being drafted. It is experimental and has not undergone thorough testing and validation yet. Many different tasks are awaiting completion with regard to both the protocol and compliant software.

If you are interested in this project or wish to contribute, feel free to contact me.
Please note that this is not a for-profit project, and there are no plans to monetize it. Additionally, we are not planning to standardize SXMP with the IETF or similar bodies at this time. Nonetheless, the protocol and all associated software will be entirely free, open-source, and publicly available.

About SXMP (a.k.a. Saillant)

The Concept

This is an application-layer protocol designed for secure instant messaging.
Saillant focuses on security enhancements and partial censorship resistance, while offering a convenient extension system by design. This protocol is heavily inspired by the philosophy of XMPP and several of its principles have been adopted in the current specification. A few other protocols have influenced SXMP's design, such as SimpleX and Signal.

Motivation and insights

A careful examination of XMPP reveals that it lacks an embedded security foundation. Instead, it advises utilizing optional extensions for that purpose. We believe that security must not be optional, as this usually creates too many unfavorable trade-offs such as metadata leakage. On the other hand, an excess of security features can decrease the level of convenience. Thus, we are interested in implementing several mandatory security measures in the core protocol, in order to maximize the level of privacy, confidentiality, and even censorship resistance to a certain extent. We seek the optimal balance between convenience and confidentiality. Ultimately, that is what Usable Security is about.
